Motorhome Hire Advice.
What is the most important advice we can offer anyone wanting to do a motorhome or campervan hire in Australia? - Book Early!!! And by 'early' we mean several months in advance; the busier the period, such as Christmas/New Year, the earlier you will need to book.
Every year we see the same thing repeated over and over again; people leave it too late to book their campervan hire – especially during busy periods. This leaves many people disappointed and frustrated that a suitable vehicle is no longer available.
Even though the entire fleet of campervans and motorhomes available for rental in Australia is very large, they will all get booked out during busy periods such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and school holidays. Larger motorhomes that are popular with families are the first to go and then 3 and 4 berth motorhomes are next to be booked out. An Australian campervan or motorhome holiday is becoming more and more popular each year by both international travellers and Australian residents. Even special event weekends such as the Bathurst race weekend in early October will see all 4, 5 and 6 berth motorhomes fully booked out months in advance.
What is a motorhome, an RV a campervan, a camper, a Winnebago?
The various names for vehicles are all interchangeable to a large degree. A camper can be anything from a 2 berth campervan with a van-like appearance to a large 6 berth motorhome that looks like a home built on a cab/chassis. An RV (recreational vehicle) is the name used more commonly in North America; the same vehicle may be called a motorhome in Australia.
A name a lot of people recognise, when thinking of a motorhome, is Winnebago; this is a trade name of a business that manufactures vehicles from 2 berth campervans to large 6 berth motorhomes and is not a type of vehicle as such.
To try and keep some consistency throughout our website we apply the following terminology in general.
Motorhome
A camper body built on a cab/chassis & available in 3, 4, 5 & 6 berth sizes
Campervan
A van style vehicle without a shower and toilet; usually 2 to 3 berth but some options can accommodate up to 4 people. Can have a permanent hi-top roof or a pop-top roof.
Deluxe Campervan
A campervan with a shower and toilet; usually a long wheel base vehicle with a permanent hi-top roof available mainly in 2 berth only
4WD Camper
A 4WD; either a station wagon with camping equipment and/or a roof-tent, or a 4WD vehicle with a purpose built camper body
